We’re in a day and time where it may be difficult to find decent role models for our daughters and nieces however we’re more than happy that we have young, educated and accomplished women like Zendaya to save the day. You may remember her from her Disney days in KC Undercover or as a singer and performer in Dancing with the Stars. Our favourite appearance of hers was at the Oscars earlier this year as she stood elegantly on the red carpet showing off her locs.
She’s in the spotlight once again spreading all kinds of #BlackGirlMagic as manufacturing company Mattel announced on Twitter that Barbie will commemorate Zendaya’s grace and composure when she responded to critic’s comments regarding her locs at the Oscars with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll!
During a recent visit to the Mattel Studios she said:
“When I was little, I didn’t have one that looked like me, so I couldn’t connect with her in that way. But getting to visit the Mattel offices and see Barbie’s vision for the future…I was able to see how they plan to diversify, broadening the horizons and the image of Barbie, and make it more, you know, open. I left the office feeling it was definitely something I wanted to be a part of.”
As a community, we’ve always lacked representation in the media and growing up I’m sure we can all agree that we didn’t see ourselves in mainstream toys. This is truly a huge step in the direction that will benefit generations to come.
We’d like to thank Zendaya for encouraging young women to speak up and be themselves regardless of public opinion!
